Questions and Answers

Below you will find answers to many common questions about Mary Wash Giving Day 2018.

What is Mary Wash Giving Day?

Mary Wash Giving Day (#MaryWashDay) is a 24-hour online day of giving to the University of Mary Washington. The day begins at 12 a.m. on Tuesday, March 20, 2018, and goes until 11:59 p.m. that night. This is our second annual Mary Wash Giving Day; last year, 1,090 donors made 1,218 gifts, raising over $217,000 in one day! We have set a goal of 1,908 gifts on Mary Wash Giving Day, in honor of the University’s founding year.

What areas can I support on Mary Wash Giving Day?

There are 11 areas across the University participating in Mary Wash Giving Day, but you can also choose to designate your gift to another designation by selecting “Other” and listing your preferred designation at checkout. The participating groups, all of which have a page on the Giving Day site, are:
UMW Athletics (and each athletic team)
Campus Recreation
College of Arts and Sciences (and its academic departments)
College of Business (and the Galen deGraff Scholarship)
College of Education
Fund for Mary Washington
UMW Galleries
UMW Libraries
Gari Melchers Home and Studio
James Monroe Museum
UMW Theatre

What if the area I would like to support is not listed?

You may support any area at the University with your Giving Day gift. To designate your Mary Wash Giving Day gift to an area that is not listed above, click on "Make Your Gift" and choose "Other" from the drop-down list of "Areas of Support"" and select "Other" from the drop-down list of "Fund Designations." You will be prompted to enter the designation for your gift.

How do Matches and Challenges work?

Your gift can count for as many matches and challenges for which it qualifies! Every gift counts in the 1908 Challenge, which will unlock $5,000 for the Fund for Mary Washington when we reach our goal of 1,908 donors. Each alumni gift will count in the Alumni Board "Go for a Grand" Challenge, which will unlock $10,000 for the Fund for Mary Washington when 1,000 alumni donate. To read about all of the matches and challenges for different areas of the University, please see the Challenges page. Some matches and challenges will be tracked automatically on the Giving Day website. Matches and challenges that are more specific in nature (i.e. the Adenan Eighties Match) will be tracked manually by Advancement staff and updated on the site. Advancement staff will ensure that your gift counts toward any match for which it is eligible!

What is the Donor Wall, and what if I don’t want to be listed?

Donors have four options upon making their gift: they can choose to have their name and gift amount displayed on the donor wall, to have only their name but not their gift amount displayed, to have only their donation amount but not their name displayed, or to remain completely anonymous with no information displayed. The choice is yours, but we encourage you to share your gift to inspire others!
