In its 48th year, the University of Mary Washington Philharmonic Orchestra boasts approximately 80 members from the student body and the community. True to its liberal arts roots, membership in the orchestra is open by audition to all UMW students, regardless of major, and to any community musician.
“The UMW Philharmonic represents one of the most significant cultural and artistic resources for the greater Fredericksburg community. For many years, it has provided an important means for Mary Washington to attract and support talented students and provide opportunities for them to engage with some of the world’s most gifted and highly recognized celebrity artists. All of us at UMW take pride in the many remarkable accomplishments of the Philharmonic Orchestra.”
Richard V. Hurley, President Emeritus
Your giving day contribution to the UMW Philharmonic Orchestra has a direct and immediate impact on our student musicians. To invest in our students' musical educations and contribute to the quality of the orchestra as a whole, the Philharmonic would like the ability to provide private music lessons with music department faculty for each UMW student playing in the orchestra. This gift will enrich the quality of musical education our students receive, as they will take weekly private lessons throughout the duration of an entire semester. This is a lifelong investment in a young musician, a way to continually raise the calibre of the Philharmonic's performances, and a great way for your gift to have a meaningful and long-lasting impact.
Each semester of private music lessons costs $350 per student. Please consider sponsoring a semester of lessons for a student!
